The script attracted the attention of industry luminaries but Davis refused to sell the script without being attached as the actor. Davis ultimately prevailed in getting the film made on a micro-budget of $180,000. Fighting Tommy Riley premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival and then went on to play at the Hamptons Film Festival (where it won the Kodak Award) and at the San Francisco Film Festival. The film opened theatrically in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, and the Hamptons on May 5, 2006.
