Det blev et gennembrud og i 1974 vendte han tilbage og gav  dobbelrollen som kirke- og trafikminister Kresten Damsgaard. Særlig  huskes Esper Hagen for sin rolle i \"Matador\" som den ambitiøse  førstemand hos Mads Skjern.
