Alvin was signed with Warner Brothers Studios for an exclusive four-year contract during the World War II era, although he was "borrowed" by 20th Century Fox to appear in 1944's Oscar-nominated The Fighting Sullivans. He appeared in more than 25 Warner Brothers films during this time, including Northern Pursuit (which starred Errol Flynn), The Beast with Five Fingers, The Very Thought of You, and Objective, Burma!. His pictures after the contract period included Irma la Douce, Inside Daisy Clover, They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, and Alfred Hitchcock's Marnie. However, it was his role in the 1943 film Destination Tokyo, in which he co-starred with John Garfield and Cary Grant, that left the largest impression on Alvin. Years later, in a 2006 interview, Alvin credited Grant with having a major impact on his career path: "I learned more about show business from him than from anyone. He was very attentive and helpful."

Alvin later enjoyed a separate television career, which spanned from the 1950s to the 1980s. His television credits included various roles on Leave It to Beaver, All in the Family, Lou Grant, Dragnet, General Hospital, Murder, She Wrote, Starsky and Hutch, The Incredible Hulk and I Spy. Alvin's also appeared in numerous television commercials advertising for such products as Mattel, H&R Block, McDonald's, Porsche and Audi.

Alvin's theater repertoire included Send Me No Flowers, The Student Prince, The Chicago Conspiracy Trial and The Cradle Will Rock. He also appeared in a production of Rain, which was directed by Charlie Chaplin.

He largely retired from acting in the 1990s; his final film appearance was in 1994's Milk Money. During his retirement, Alvin often showed his movies for audiences at the Conejo Valley Senior Concerns, an organization for senior citizens based in Thousand Oaks, California.","1917-10-24","2009-02-27",2,null,113704,"nm0023569","Acting","John Alvin","Chicago, Illinois, USA",0.8085,"/llCjyU2jvjiXofhVjOhsZhSl2Lr.jpg
21,40,55,72,87,102,116,129,142,156,170,182,194,206,216,229,243,256,267,280,293,304,315,327,340,354,367,380,391,402,414,425,436,447,458,469,480,491,504,517,529,542,553,564,575,587,600,613,624,634,648,660,671,682,693,709,723,739,751,765,779,795,810,825,840,853,867,882,898,913,927,938,951,963,977,990,1004,1014,1024,1038,1049,1061,1071,1082,1095,1107,1118,1130,1141,1153,1166,1180,1185,1191,1205,1218,1224,1229,1244,1250,1256,1262,1277,1292,1298,1310,1321,1327,1333,1346,1358,1371
"/bFY9vBmSAWn5utDmI7thmg4H1cu.jpg",[24,25,26],80,18,53,35077,"Three Strangers","en","On the eve of the Chinese New Year, three strangers, Crystal Shackleford, married to a wealthy philanderer; Jerome Artbutny, an outwardly respectable judge; and Johnny West, a seedy sneak thief, make a pact before a small statue of the Chinese goddess of Destiny. A significant change in cast and premise for the 1965–66 season divides the program into two distinct eras; aside from Ball, only Gale Gordon, who joined the program for its second season, remained. For the first three seasons, Vivian Vance was the co-star.

The earliest scripts were entitled The Lucille Ball Show, but when this title was declined, producers thought of calling the show This Is Lucy or The New Adventures of Lucy, before deciding on the title The Lucy Show. Ball won consecutive Emmy Awards as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the series' final two seasons, 1966–67 and 1967–68.",40.4346,"/sdmFoI7pKzE4XoIVrVNt4ouXlbH.jpg","1962-10-01",7.065,"Director","65095ef53cd12c00ca570abe","1966-01-31
"/31DYtr1OvZOyMDwToZsNp0L9ib8.jpg",[25,58],1737,[698],"Four Star Playhouse","Four Star Playhouse is an American television anthology series that ran from 1952 to 1956, sponsored in its first bi-weekly season by The Singer Company; Bristol-Myers became an alternate sponsor when it became a weekly series in the fall of 1953. However, several other performers took the lead from time to time, including Ronald Colman and Joan Fontaine.

Blake Edwards was among the writers and directors who contributed to the series.
